Research

Since Macquarie Neurosurgery & Spine was founded in 2008, our neurosurgeons and scholars have impacted Australian and international research, introducing several paradigm shifts in the scientific and surgical panorama.

With about 1,000 research outputs (including peer-reviewed scientific and surgical publications in national and international journals, textbooks, and book chapters), cited more than 15,000 times, several hundreds of invitations to deliver lectures at national and international conferences in the fields of neurosurgery and neurosciences, and several awards and grants, totalling more than 15 million dollars in research funding, we have proved our leading role in the Australian landscape of neurosurgery and academic research.

Macquarie Neurosurgery & Spine has received several grants from national and international agencies, including, amongst others, NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council), ARC (Australian Research Council), RACS (Royal Australasian College of Surgeons), Chiari and Syringomyelia Research Foundation (Column of Hope), EANS (European Association of Neurosurgical Societies), Tour de Cure, and Brain Foundation.

It is the only surgical unit in Australasia with two surgeons, Professors Stoodley (in 2012) and Di Ieva (in 2019), being awarded the most prestigious research award from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the John Mitchell Crouch Fellowship.

The use of cutting-edge tools and technologies have put Macquarie Neurosurgery & Spine at the forefront of innovation. We have performed research on several neurological and neurosurgical diseases, and pioneered innovative applications in different fields, including:

  • Biology, pathology, epidemiology and treatment of brain arteriovenous malformations, including promising and revolutionary techniques to make these cerebrovascular diseases susceptible to radiosurgery
  • Basic science, neuroimaging and treatment of Chiari malformation and syringomyelia
  • Technology platforms to analyse intracranial pressure and cerebrospinal fluid disturbances
  • Neuroimaging to predict the genetic mutations in brain tumours even before surgery
  • Studies on quality of life of patients after brain surgery
  • Proteomics and genetics analysis of brain tumours, brain metastases and cerebrovascular diseases
  • Computational and fractal-based analysis of cerebrovascular diseases, brain tumours, and cerebrospinal fluid disturbances
  • Application of Artificial Intelligence to study brain diseases, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and brain tumours
  • Gamma Knife radiosurgery for brain diseases
  • Computational modelling and Artificial Intelligence in machine vision and cognitive neurosciences
  • New surgical tools and software for brain and spine retraction, pre- and intra-operative planning
  • Eye-tracking in the clinical neurosciences.
  • Magnetoencephalography in the clinical neurosciences.
  • Connectomics (i.e., the study of the anatomical and functional brain connections) in patients affected by brain tumours, pain, and other diseases.

Moreover, MQN leads an innovative laboratory in cerebrovascular neurosurgery and syringomyelia (Head: Prof Marcus Stoodley) as well as the first Computational NeuroSurgery Lab in the World (Head: Prof Antonio Di Ieva).

This immense diversity of scope and pioneering achievements are demonstrations of Macquarie Neurosurgery and Spine’s leadership role in the MQ Health paradigm of Heal, Learn and Discover.
